Fallujah

Fallujah is an American death metal band from San Francisco, California, formed in 2007. Their line-up changes over time include founders Alex Hofmann and Scott Carstairs, along with Tommy Logan, Dan Wissinger and Suliman Arghandiwal in the original formation. The band’s current listed members are Alex Hofmann, Kyle Schaefer, Sam Mooradian, Andrew Benjamin Baird, Evan Brewer, Scott Carstairs and Brian James.

Style and development

Fallujah is associated with technical death metal, progressive metal, deathcore and death metal. Their early work develops from a technical death metal base, then moves toward a more atmospheric style. After around a year of playing songs from previous recordings, they begin writing their debut EP, Leper Colony. Before recording it, the band parts ways with original singer Suliman Arghandiwal, and Hofmann takes over vocals while Rob Maramonte joins on guitar.

The band’s sound becomes more defined on later releases through melodic lead guitar, atmospheric chord changes, ambient passages, clean guitars and female vocals. Nomadic, released independently in 2013, is described as the release that solidifies this direction.

Albums and releases

Fallujah completes its first full-length album, The Harvest Wombs, in 2011 with Unique Leader Records. The album expands the band’s audience and establishes a signature approach that moves away from heavy breakdowns. In 2014, the band releases The Flesh Prevails on Unique Leader Records. That album arrives while Fallujah is on the Summer Slaughter tour with Morbid Angel, The Faceless, Dying Fetus and Thy Art Is Murder, and it receives strong critical acclaim, although some criticism focuses on its production and limited dynamic range.

In 2016, the band signs to Nuclear Blast and releases Dreamless. The album receives critical acclaim, and the song “The Void Alone” has a music video featuring Tori Letzler. The songs “Scar Queen”, “The Prodigal Son”, “Amber Gaze” and “Lacuna” are also issued as playthroughs. In 2019, Anthony Palermo becomes the band’s frontman and the group announces its fourth studio album, Undying Light, alongside the single “Ultraviolet”.

Name

The band name refers to Fallujah, a city in Iraq. The name reflects the members’ interest in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, post-9/11 tensions, and wider conflict between East and West, which they link to the themes behind the band.
