Exhibit A

Exhibit A is a prog rock band from England, and there are several acts with this name. One version of the group forms in late 1978 in the United Kingdom, when four 14-year-olds connect over John Peel’s late-night radio shows and begin making music together. They also produce three issues of a fanzine called Wombat Weekly.

Early recordings and releases

The band records its first EP, No Elephants this Side of Watford Gap, at a central London youth club in 1979. At that point the members are 15 and 16 years old, and they are thought to be the youngest band to release their own record independently. A second EP follows two months later. The group splits by 1981, after which six further tracks appear across three collections on the Dead Hedgehog label to complete its official catalogue.

Members and related projects

Guitarist Paul Platypus also plays with the Reflections alongside Mark Perry and Nag from the Door & the Window, and with Twelve Cubic Feet, which includes former Exhibits drummer Andrew Lunchbox and bassist Matthew Matrices among others. He also founds Namedrop Records and Cubic Music publishing. Matthew continues in Solid Space from 1981 onward.

Other act of the same name

Another Exhibit A is an alternative metal band from Stoke-on-Trent, also in the United Kingdom. That group plays extreme metal with influences from outside the genre, appears in publications such as Metal Hammer and Kerrang!, and receives regular play on BBC Radio 1. Its debut mini-album, A Safer Place, appears on Fulmination Records in the UK. It also plans a full-length debut album titled Portrait in Rhyme and tours the UK. A further Exhibit A is a grindcore/crust band from Australia.
