Esben and The Witch
Esben and The Witch are a Brighton-based trio active since 2008. The group members are Rachel Davies, Daniel Copeman and Thomas Fisher. Their name comes from a Danish fairytale.
Releases and early activity
The band’s early output includes Lucia, at the Precipice. Their debut album Violet Cries is issued on Matador Records. They are associated with alternative rock, indie rock, post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze, and are also described as an indie rock act.
Press, performances and projects
Esben and The Witch receive positive coverage from NME, Pitchfork Media and The Guardian. They perform alongside Warpaint, The xx, Wild Beasts, Foals and The Big Pink. In 2010, they contribute to the London edition of The Creators Project by reworking 33’s track “Corridors” into an eighteen-minute soundscape for Karl Sadler’s lit forest installation.
Recognition
The band are nominated for a Q Award as “next big thing” and are included on the BBC Sound of 2011 longlist.
