Empress Ayeola
Empress Ayeola is a reggae singer and songwriter from England who grows up in Jamaica after moving there at the age of two. Her real name is Jannette Reid, and her stage name is said to come from Yoruba, meaning “joy and wealthy life.” She is also known as “Fire Mamma.”
Early development and influences
She begins developing her musical talent as a teenager, attending music classes with Sonia Spence. Her work is rooted in conscious reggae and Rastafari themes, with songs that focus on love, joy, respect for Emperor Haile Selassie I, and social commentary.
Recording career
Empress Ayeola works with musicians linked to the Jamaican Rhino Record label, including The Fire House Crew, and later with the Three Mile Record label in London. Her debut album is Isat Innat, released on Gaddamaweh Productions. The title is given as Ethiopian Amharic for “Fire Mamma.”
The album contains 17 tracks and includes Hear The Cry featuring Jah Mason, Heads Of Babylon with Jah Mali, and Boundless Love, both of which also appear on Sandy Thompson’s Africa River Nile label. Other named songs from the album include Rastafari Works, Take Care Of Our Children, Warring, The Youths Of Today, The Wicked Shall Perish, Let Me Be Babylon, and Ketch Him Heng Him.
Performances and collaborations
She performs across several European countries and in the United States, sharing stages with Mighty Diamonds, Pat Kelly, Sugar Minott, Jah Mason, Capleton, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Sister Carol, and others. Her singing is noted for a strong delivery and melodic sweetness, and she presents herself as a conscious vocalist and songwriter within reggae.
