Emmet Scanlan

Emmet Scanlan is a musician from Minnesota, United States, associated with the group Emmet Scanlan & What the Good Thought. He forms the act in summer 2004 after returning from travelling, and settles in Galway, where he gathers a band to perform his songs. Before that, he spends four years studying science at university.

Emmet Scanlan & What the Good Thought

The group forms around a mixed international line-up built through connections at Tig Neachtain’s bar in Galway, where Scanlan works and where the other musicians spend time. The lineup is Emmet Scanlan on guitar and vocals, Alan Preims on percussion, Peter Akerstrom on classical guitar and bass, and Nicola Geddes on cello. The other members come from Italy, Sweden and Scotland respectively, giving the band an unusual instrumentation and a multinational character.

The act works within independent music and releases a self-issued EP that sells more than 2,000 copies from 2006 onwards. It performs at a number of festivals in Ireland, including Electric Picnic and the Galway Arts Festival, and also appears abroad. Scanlan tours in the United States with the Saw Doctors in summer 2007, and in February 2008 the group is the only Irish act invited to play the 20th International Folk Alliance Music Conference in Memphis, Tennessee.
