Egg
Egg are a British progressive rock group from London, active from 1968 to 1974. The line-up centres on Mont Campbell, Clive Brooks and Dave Stewart, and the band is associated with the Canterbury scene.
Origins and formation
Egg form after guitarist Steve Hillage leaves Uriel, a band also known as Arzachel. The remaining musicians continue as a trio: Dave Stewart plays organ, piano and tone generator; Mont Campbell plays organ, piano and French horn; and Clive Brooks plays drums.
Recordings and style
The group releases two albums in 1969 and 1970: Egg and The Polite Force. Their music is largely instrumental, complex and tightly arranged, with clear classical references, including Johann Sebastian Bach, and some jazz influence. Their sound also has psychedelic and art rock associations.
Later activity
After the second album, Dave Stewart joins Hatfield and the North. Egg then reform briefly to record The Civil Surface in 1974 before splitting up.
