edbl

edbl is the alias of Ed Black, a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Chester in the United Kingdom. He studies music at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, graduating in 2013, and later moves to London, where he is based in Brixton. While studying, he develops an interest in R&B, hip-hop and soul, alongside Ady Suleiman, with whom he continues to work regularly.

Music and collaborations

He begins making beats while touring as a session musician, using them as the basis for later releases. His work sits in lo-fi hip hop and related electronic, chillout and R&B-influenced territory. He releases music through edbl recordings, and also works in partnership with College Music Records on later beat-tape material.

In 2019, he releases four debut singles, each featuring a different guest artist: Isaac Waddington, Kofi Stone, Tilly Valentine and Jay Alexzander. These singles are followed by edbl beats, vol.1, a 19-track instrumental beat tape built from beats, loops and ideas gathered over the previous three years.

Further releases

In 2020, edbl issues Boys & Girls Mixtape, a project featuring collaborations with artists from the UK soul, R&B and jazz scenes, including Zach Said, Carrie Baxter and Carmody. He then releases edbl beats, pt.I, the first part of a second beat tape.
