East

East is a Hungarian progressive rock band that forms in 1975 and remains active. The group is based in Hungary and is known for rock-oriented music, especially progressive rock.

Line-up and formation

The band forms around guitarist János Varga, keyboardist Géza Pálvölgyi, singer Miklós Zareczky, bassist Péter Móczán and percussionist István Király. Other members associated with the group include Szakcsi Lakatos Béla, Homonyik Sándor, Dorozsmai Péter, Takáts Tamás and Miklós Zareczky.

Albums and style

East debuts in 1981 with Játékok, later re-recorded in English as Blue Paradise. A year later it releases Hüség, a concept album that is widely regarded by fans as its strongest record. After that, the band moves toward more commercially oriented material with Rések a Falon, which brings it significant success. In 1984 it also records the instrumental rock ballet Az Áldozat (Szodoma).

Career development

Zareczky is later replaced on vocals by József Tisza for Rések a Falon. Across its career, East shifts between progressive rock, conceptual work, instrumental pieces and more popular songs, while keeping a strong place in Hungarian rock.
