East India Youth

East India Youth is the electronic music project of William Doyle, a musician from Bournemouth, United Kingdom. His work spans ambient, electronic, experimental, IDM and synth-pop.

Early work

Doyle starts out in an indie group called Doyle & The Fourfathers while he is living in Southampton, joining when he is 17. The group’s demo is played by Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, and they tour with the Undertones. Doyle later moves to Ruislip in northwest London for family reasons.

East India Youth and releases

He takes the name East India Youth from the location of his flat in London’s Docklands. Recording for Total Strife Forever begins in 2010. Dripping Down is promoted by Stolen Recordings in February 2013. After Doyle meets John Doran, founder of The Quietus, in 2012, the Hostel EP is released on The Quietus’ label, The Quietus Phonographic Corporation, in spring 2013. Looking for Someone follows in October 2013.

Total Strife Forever is nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2014 and is released by Stolen Recordings in January that year. Its featured singles are Hinterland and Heaven, How Long.

Carousel appears in February 2015 as an advance release from the second album, Culture of Volume. That album is released by XL Recordings and is mostly recorded and produced at Doyle’s London home, mixed by Graham Sutton, and titled after a fragment from Rick Holland’s poem “Monument”. Turn Away is issued as the lead single.

Later activity

After the Culture of Volume tour, Doyle retires the East India Youth name and returns to recording under his own name.
