Dub FX

Dub FX

Dub FX is an Australian beatbox and dub artist born in 1983. He grows out of a street-performance approach based on live looping, beatboxing and freestyle delivery, and he uses Roland BOSS effect and loop pedals to build layered performances in real time. He starts out performing in several bands in St Kilda, Melbourne, before travelling widely as a street performer.

Performance style

His work centres on solo live construction of songs from beatboxing and looping, rather than a conventional band setup. He is also associated with busking in Europe, often performing with his girlfriend, the Flower Fairy, who appears alongside him.

Dub FX as a band name

The name Dub FX also refers to a reggae band that forms in San Francisco, California, in 2004. That group draws on influences including Steel Pulse, Aswad, Burning Spear, UB40, Roots Radics, Dub Nation and a range of Jamaican roots bands from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The band line-up includes Paul Dawson on vocals and keyboards, Dale Mungaray on vocals and alto sax, Justin Cosgrove on bass, Andy Van Doren on lead and rhythm guitar, Scott Maddern on drums and percussion, Dan Shafer on keyboards and percussion, and Craig Bryant on trombone. Kila Mega Giga Tera is also listed as a member. The project is associated with Convoy Un.Ltd.
