Dr Meaker
Dr Meaker is a drum and bass group from Bristol, England, active since 2005. The lineup includes Simon Alexander, Celestine, Tenisha Edwards, Laurent John, Clive Meaker, Mike Prince, Sam Shotaka, Tom Wheeler and Ben Wood. The act is associated with drum and bass and liquid funk, and its music draws on soul, jazz and reggae influences.
The project centres on a sound built around vocals and heavy bass, moving between commercial-radio polish and underground club styles. Clive Meaker is identified with the act, and the group’s name is also linked to Bristol’s music scene.
Releases and collaborations
Dr Meaker’s debut album, A Lesson From The Speaker, is described as having been developed over several years. It includes collaborations with vocalist Yolanda Quartey, who is noted for work with Massive Attack. The album also features a sample of The Korgis’ Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime on the track Need Love.
Among the group’s singles are Moving And Grooving and Bad Boy Calling. The latter appears in multiple mixes, including versions by Rob Smith and False Flag.
