DJ SY
DJ Sy is a UK DJ and producer, also known as Simon Cranny. He is associated with happy hardcore and rave, and is linked to jungle, old school hardcore and house in club culture and production under different names.
Career
He develops an early interest in hip hop and scratching at school and spends a long time refining his turntablism. While studying in Nottingham during the acid house period, he remains in the city after college and begins working as a professional club DJ around 1989, playing a mix of hip hop, soul and house. Around 1990 he takes a residency at the Nottingham club Venus.
Sy co-owns a studio in Aldershot, Hampshire, and founds Quosh Records in 1994. The label becomes one of the more productive labels in hardcore. Quosh Records is the label most closely associated with his work.
Collaborations and aliases
He works with DJ Unknown as part of Sy & Unknown, and the pair also appear as The Lost Boys. Together they produce across a wide range of dance styles, including breaks, drum and bass, house and garage, and they release records under several pseudonyms. Their output includes charting garage tracks as well as hardcore material.
Notable releases
Among the best-known tracks associated with Sy and Unknown are the remix of “Discoland” and “Bring Me Round To Love”. Other releases linked with him include Emotions, The Rip Off E.P. - Part 2, The Scratchmaster's Obsession, Hardcore NRG, In Effect 96, Solid State Records Volumes 1 & 2 (Remixes), Follow Me, Follow Me (Sy Remix), Rushtria - The Dance Paradise Album, United Dance Volume 1, United Dance Volume 4 and Ecstatic - Volume Two.
