DIR EN GREY are a Japanese metal group from Osaka, active since 1997. The band consists of Kyō on vocals, Kaoru and Die on guitar, Toshiya on bass, and Shinya on drums. They are associated with alternative metal, alternative rock, avant-garde metal, loud kei, metal and nu metal, and began as a visual kei act before moving toward a less elaborate stage appearance while keeping a dramatic live image.

Formation and early years

DIR EN GREY form in February 1997 after the break-up of the independent band La:Sadie's, in which Kyo, Die, Shinya and Kaoru all have roles before regrouping with Toshiya. The band first performs under the name Deathmask, a Kuroyume cover act, before starting work as DIR EN GREY in Osaka. Their name combines German, French and English elements and is chosen to suggest an image that sits between black and white. An early independent release, Missa, follows a few months later.

The band gains attention in 1998 through independently produced songs such as “Jealous” and “-I’ll-”, with the latter reaching number seven on the Oricon chart and setting a record at the time for an independent release. Before their major-label debut, they become the first independent band to perform at Nippon Budokan.

Major-label debut and stylistic change

In 1999, DIR EN GREY make their major debut with three singles released at the same time, all produced by Yoshiki and all entering the Oricon top ten. Their first full-length album, Gauze, follows later that year. Macabre in 2000 begins their self-produced work and introduces some folk elements, while the tour is disrupted when Kyo suffers sudden hearing loss in one ear. The band resumes touring after recovery and closes the run at Nippon Budokan in 2001.

Kisō appears in 2002, and the band tours across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea. That period also includes the single “Child Prey”, used as the second opening theme for the anime Baki the Grappler. Vulgar, released in 2003, marks a clear move toward heavier rock and metal.

International touring and later releases

DIR EN GREY begin touring in Europe in 2005, with shows in Berlin and Paris drawing strong demand despite limited promotion. They appear at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, and later tour with The Used and Killswitch Engage on the Japanese leg of Taste of Chaos. Their release Withering to Death. reaches international charts, including positions in Finland and Germany, and several tracks are used in the film Death Trance. In 2006 they expand into the United States, including appearances at SXSW and at venues in New York and Los Angeles. That year they also join Korn’s Family Values Tour and appear at Loudpark Festival.

The band’s tenth anniversary in 2007 brings a large-scale touring schedule across twelve countries. The Marrow of a Bone is issued in multiple countries and enters several Billboard charts. They tour with Deftones, appear at European festivals including Wacken Open Air, and later support Linkin Park. In 2008, they perform at the hide memorial summit and release Uroboros in seventeen countries. The album reaches number one on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart and enters the Billboard 200, and the supporting tour includes their first South American shows.

2010s to present

In 2010, DIR EN GREY perform at Sonisphere Festival with Iron Maiden and Rammstein, debut in Russia, and tour North America with Apocalyptica. Dum Spiro Spero follows in 2011, alongside the Scream for the Truth campaign after the Tōhoku disaster. In 2012, Kyo is diagnosed with vocal nodule dysphonia and the band pauses activity before returning with the single “Rinkaku”. The Unraveling appears in 2013, featuring reworked early material, and the band headlines the Japanese line-up at Ozzfest Japan.

Arche is released in 2014, with a sound centred on stripped-down arrangements and revised emotional themes. Touring continues across Europe, North America, China and Australia, including an appearance at Luna Sea’s Lunatic Fest. Their long-running From Depression To tours continue through 2017. The Insulated World appears in 2018 and enters the Oricon top ten. In 2020, the band streams a live performance from KT Zepp Yokohama, and their catalogue begins appearing on streaming services in 2022. Phalaris is also released in 2022. In 2024, they issue “19990120” and “The Devil In Me”, and they return to Europe with a tour structured around performances of Withering to Death. and Uroboros. A release titled MORTAL DOWNER and a Japanese tour for 2026 are announced.

Style and reputation

DIR EN GREY are known for a style that shifts across their career, moving from alternative rock toward heavier metal and later incorporating elements associated with progressive metal, death metal, groove metal and atmospheric experimentation. Their work is often hard to categorise because of these changes. Kyo’s lyrics focus on pain, human weakness and natural suffering, and he usually avoids explaining individual songs in detail. The band maintains a strong international following while continuing to work primarily in Japanese.

Membership and labels

The group’s line-up remains consistent: Kyō, Kaoru, Die, Toshiya and Shinya. Their labels include EastWest Japan, FIREWALL DIV., GAN-SHIN, Warcon Records, The End Records and Okami Records. They are also linked with Free-Will through their independent-era distribution and management.
