Derrin Nauendorf

Derrin Nauendorf is an Australian acoustic blues rock singer-songwriter and guitarist who builds a live reputation through extensive touring in the UK and Europe. He arrives in the UK from Australia with a guitar, limited money and little more than extra clothing, then spends years taking any gigs available, often living simply and travelling around the country to play in small venues, festivals and unusual locations.

Career

Over time, Nauendorf plays more than 1,000 gigs and builds audiences in England, Scotland, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France and Australia. He sells more than 12,000 albums independently, without a record label, manager, agent or press officer, and becomes a regular on the festival circuit. He also supports Van Morrison and performs in a wide range of settings, from grand castles in Paris to World War II bunkers in Germany and small shows in Denmark.

He uses an old Post Office van as both transport and home for six months, which helps him reach more parts of the UK and expand his live work. His performances are described through his own material rather than outside backing, and his independence remains central to his career.

Recordings and style

The Rattling Wheel is his fifth release and the first to feature a band. Earlier releases include New History and Wasteland. On this recording, he moves towards bigger arrangements and a more energetic band sound. His songs draw on Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Martin Stevenson, Richard Thompson, John Martyn and traditional British folk, while keeping a rootsy, blues-led style.

Nauendorf works with his own PR company, radio and TV plugger, and marketing team, paying for them himself. His recorded music also reaches iTunes, extending the audience built through live shows. He is known as an intense, raw live performer whose reputation grows from constant touring and repeated bookings.
