Delays

Delays are a British indie and alternative rock group from Southampton, formed in 2001. The band consists of Greg Gilbert, Aaron Gilbert, Colin Fox and Rowly. Greg Gilbert dies in 2021.

Background

Delays build their sound around harmonies, guitars and a melodic, groove-led approach that draws on British pop and rock traditions. Their style is associated with indie rock, britpop, alternative rock and broader rock and indie classification.

Recordings and releases

The band signs to Rough Trade in 2004 and releases its debut album, Faded Seaside Glamour, that same year. The album includes the top twenty singles “Long Time Coming” and “Nearer Than Heaven”.

Their second album, You See Colours, arrives in 2006 and extends their psych-pop sound with a faster pace. It produces the singles “Valentine” and “Hideaway”.

In 2008 they release Everything’s the Rush, followed by Star Tiger Star Ariel in 2010. The band later begins recording a fifth studio album at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth in 2012, although the album is not released.

Profile and reception

Delays are described as drawing on influences including early Pink Floyd, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. Their music is linked to “angelic” vocal harmonies, beat-group energy and pop songwriting, and they are noted for a strong reaction from audiences in North America and elsewhere.
