Deja Voodoo
Deja Voodoo is a New Zealand group from Auckland, active since 2002, with Matt Heath listed as a member. The band works across comedy, grunge, and rock, and is associated with garage rock, alternative rock, and psycho-rock styles.
Origins and television beginnings
The group begins as the fictional house band for the New Zealand cult comedy programme Back of the Y Masterpiece Television. After learning songs quickly in order to take the joke on tour, the project turns into a real live band. This early connection to comedy remains central to its identity.
Live reputation
Deja Voodoo becomes known for chaotic performances and deliberately shambolic stage behaviour. The live shows include flaming guitars and routines involving guitars being smashed over singer Chris Stapp’s head, helping the band build a cult following from Dunedin to Auckland.
Recordings
In 2004, the band signs to Liberation Records and releases Brown Sabbath, a concept album built around beer-drinking themes. It includes tracks such as “Beers”, “We Are Deja Voodoo”, and “Today Tomorrow Timaru”, and sells in significant numbers across New Zealand and also reaches Australia.
In 2009, Deja Voodoo releases The Shape of Grunge to Come..., which further establishes its parody-heavy approach to rock and its reputation for unpredictable stage antics.
