Debbie Bond

Debbie Bond is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Alabama who works in blues and blues rock, with elements of soul, rock, jazz and country in her sound. She has performed in the Alabama backwoods for more than 30 years and builds her repertoire from a mix of covers and original songs.

Background and musical style

Bond’s singing is often compared with Bonnie Raitt and Maria Muldaur, both of whom she names as influences. Her work is shaped by long immersion in the blues scene, and her guitar playing, voice and songwriting reflect that background while still sounding contemporary. She plays a direct, roots-based style that ranges from house-rocking covers to original material.

Performing history

She spends years performing with older traditional Alabama blues musicians, including Johnny Shines, Eddie Kirkland and Willie King. That experience forms a central part of her musical development and connects her to the state’s blues heritage.

Recordings

Her album Hearts Are Wild appears in 2011 and reflects the range of her sound, bringing together blues, soul, rock, jazz and country influences.

Alabama Blues Project

Bond is the co-founder and executive director of the Alabama Blues Project, an educational non-profit organisation devoted to preserving and promoting Alabama’s blues tradition.
