Davide Squillace

Davide Squillace is an Italian DJ and producer, born in 1977. He studies at the Naples School of Sound Engineering before leaving his hometown for Barcelona in 2004, and he goes on to build a career in electronic music that spans minimal, minimal techno, tech house and techno.

Career

After relocating to Barcelona, Squillace tours widely across Europe and releases music on a broad range of labels, including Ovum, Saved, Sci+Tec, Desolat, Get Physical, Supernature, Cadenza, Kaoz Theory, No19, Moon Harbour and Hot Creations. He also founds his own labels and imprints, including Sketch, Minisketch, Hideout and Titbit.

In 2007, he begins a residency with Circo Loco at DC10 in Ibiza, and he remains part of that circle while also appearing on Circoloco tours. He also works as one third of Better Lost Than Stupid alongside Matthias Tanzmann and Martin Buttrich. The trio develops after Squillace and Tanzmann have already played together at DC10, and an earlier back-to-back set with Buttrich at Electric Zoo in New York helps shape the project.

Projects and collaborations

In 2012, Squillace produces a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and launches This And That Lab, a platform described as both an artistic think tank and a record label. Through it, he develops work across music, visual art, design, fashion and writing, and he collaborates with a range of artists and makers including sculptors, videographers, shoe designers and jewellery makers.

One of his noted collaborations is with Marcelo Burlon, owner of Country of Milan. Their joint release, Gualicho, is accompanied by a limited run of T-shirts and bracelets, and the track also serves as part of the soundtrack for Burlon’s women’s show in Milan. He also develops Blender, an events concept first presented at Art Basel in 2015, where data collected during the night is used to create a three-dimensional artwork.
