Biography
David Lee is the name used by several musicians, including a US guitarist and performer. One David Lee lives in LaPorte, Colorado, and works as a solo artist and as a member of The Lee Brothers Band and F.L.X. He sings, plays guitar and composes, and he also performs as a headliner at The T-Bar in Wellington. He has also performed with the English artist Len Powell and the Lightning and Thunder Band.
Another David Lee is a pianist, orchestra leader, arranger, songwriter and film composer. Born David Cyril Aarons in Newington, London, he wins the Melody Maker poll for best new jazz pianist in 1942. After living in South Africa, he invites Johnny Dankworth to perform there in 1954, and Dankworth persuades him to return to England as pianist and arranger for the Johnny Dankworth band. He also performs with Terry and McGhee, the Buddy Tate Quartet and Jack Parnell, and arranges for Norman Wisdom, Benny Hill and Judy Garland. From 1959 he leads the Dave Lee Trio, which records a number of albums. His composing work begins in the 1950s with television advertising jingles, after which he collaborates with Herbert Kretzmer on songs including Bangers and Mash, Goodness Gracious Me and Kinky Boots. His film music career begins in 1960, and Masque of the Red Death is his best-known score. In 1983 he is elected BBC Jazz Society Musician of the Year, and in 1990 he is one of the founders of Jazz FM.
