David Jordan

David Jordan is a singer-songwriter associated with soul, pop and R&B. He is a guitar player in Long Distance Calling and is based in Germany.

Early life and influences

Jordan is born in Barnet to a mother from Montserrat and a father from Calcutta. He describes himself as something of an outsider at school and says he does not fit easily into groups. As a teenager in the early 1990s, when many classmates are listening to grunge, house and hip-hop, he is drawn instead to older styles and performers. He develops an early interest in soul records owned by his mother and listens to Marvin Gaye and The Jackson Five. He then discovers James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Cab Calloway, Guns N' Roses, Prince and Lenny Kravitz, and also takes an interest in Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.

Songwriting and performance

Jordan begins writing songs at 12 and soon starts recording in local studios. He says he has a strong connection to performing live: he feels anxious before going on stage, but once he is performing he loses that tension. He also says that live shows affect him strongly afterwards and that he feels agitated in the evening when he is not playing.

Recording work

After a guest vocal appearance on a track published by Trevor Horn and Jill Sinclair's ZTT, he is given the opportunity to develop his demo material and assemble a live band. He records his debut album in London with Trevor Horn. The album includes the songs
