Darren Emerson

Darren Emerson is a dance music DJ, producer and label owner from Hornchurch, United Kingdom. He works in dance and electronica, with a background in techno, trance, house, electronic and tech house.

Career

Emerson begins DJing as a teenager, mixing hip-hop records from the age of 14 and playing regularly in local venues in Essex by 16. He then moves into house music and builds a reputation as one of the leading British DJs, with bookings at clubs including The Milk Bar, Limelights and Venus.

In 1990, Martin Prudence introduces him to Karl Hyde, who invites him to join Underworld as the third member. Emerson becomes part of the group during a period that leads to their commercial breakthrough with dubnobasswithmyheadman in 1993. While they work on their next album, Second Toughest in the Infants, Underworld release “Born Slippy .NUXX”, which becomes widely known after its use in the film Trainspotting.

He also develops a profile as a remixer, working on tracks by artists including The Chemical Brothers and Björk. In 2000, he leaves Underworld to focus on solo DJ and remix work and on running labels.

Solo work and labels

After leaving Underworld, Emerson releases Global Underground: Uruguay in 2000 and Global Underground: Singapore in 2001. He then launches his Underwater label with “Episode 1” in 2002. Through Underwater Records, he continues to release his own music and tracks by new artists. The label also develops a night at Pacha, Ibiza, initially alongside Erick Morillo under a joint Underwater/Subliminal Records event, before Emerson hosts a separate full Underwater night there. The night wins House Event of the Summer at the DJ Magazine awards during its second summer at the venue.

Emerson continues to tour internationally, while also maintaining a bi-monthly residency at The End in London and releasing an annual Underwater Records compilation each summer. He performs at Sensation White in Amsterdam Arena in 2007. In 2008, he releases another Global Underground compilation, Bogota.

In 2010, he launches DETONE, a label on which he releases the club tracks “Gracelands” and “Decisions”.
