Danny Brown is an American hip-hop artist from Dallas who is identified with Detroit, where he comes from the Dexter-Linwood area. He is also an engineer. Born Daniel Dewan Sewell, he uses the stage name Danny Brown and is known for an unconventional approach to rap that uses multiple flows and cadences. His nickname, “The Hybrid,” reflects a style that moves between low, gravelly delivery and a high, manic vocal register.

Brown’s lyrics often focus on life in Detroit, including poverty, drug use, difficult circumstances and his own experiences in the city’s underground scenes. Brown works with a number of Detroit hip-hop figures, including J Dilla, Black Milk, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Trick Trick and T3. His 2023 solo album Quaranta is described as a spiritual successor to XXX and focuses on reflection, substance abuse, alcoholism, Black identity, exhaustion from making music, and other personal experiences. The album features MIKE. He also releases the singles “Tantor” and “Jenn’s Terrific Vacation,” the latter featuring drummer Kassa Overall and addressing gentrification in Detroit.
