Daniele Baldelli is an Italian DJ associated with the development of cosmic disco. He is regarded as one of the movement’s founding figures and is known for a style that combines European electronica, synth pop played at slower speeds, equalizer effects, and ethnic folk music.

Style and influence

Baldelli’s sound draws on African and Brazilian music as well as the slower, atmospheric use of disco and electronic elements. This approach sets his work apart from Italo disco, which is closely linked to club culture in northern Italy in the 1970s. His sets help shape the cosmic disco aesthetic through a mixture of hypnotic rhythms and eclectic source material.

Career

Baldelli is born in Italy and is from Cattolica. He makes his DJ debut at 17 and later spends several years working at the Tabu Club. He is then recruited to play at Baia, which leads to a long residency at Cosmic, a venue by Lake Garda.

The Cosmic club opens in April 1979 and becomes central to the development of Baldelli’s signature style. His approach is also influenced by the club’s drug culture, especially heroin, which contributes to the slower dance tempo associated with the scene. Although the cosmic disco movement declines during the 1980s, Baldelli’s reputation continues to carry his career into later decades.

Legacy

Baldelli’s influence remains associated with cosmic disco well beyond the period in which the style emerges. His profile is also helped by compilations such as Cosmic Sound and Baia Degli Angeli 1977-1978, which document the sound linked to his work.
