Dan Hill

Dan Hill is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Toronto, Canada, working mainly in pop and folk. Born Daniel Hill Jr. in 1954, he is the son of social scientist and public servant Daniel G. Hill and the brother of author Lawrence Hill.

Career

Hill has a recording career built around adult pop and singer-songwriter material. He has major hits with “Sometimes When We Touch” and “Can’t We Try,” a duet with Vonda Shepard. In Canada, he has a stronger commercial profile than in the United States, where later singles do not reach the same level of success.

He records for If Dreams Had Wings Music Ltd. One of his songs, “It’s a Long Road,” appears in the 1982 action film First Blood; the track is written by Jerry Goldsmith and recorded by Hill for the film.

Notable recordings and appearances

In 1985, Hill appears among a group of Canadian performers on the benefit single “Tears Are Not Enough” by Northern Lights. In 1987, he returns to the Billboard Hot 100 with “Can’t We Try” and the near Top 40 single “Never Thought (That I Could Love).”

Legacy

A road trip to one of his concerts becomes the subject of the 1994 Canadian comedy film South of Wawa.
