Damian Marley
Damian Marley, known as “Jr. Gong”, is a Jamaican reggae artist from Nine Mile, Jamaica. He is the youngest son of Bob Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, and he grows up in a family with a long musical tradition. His nickname comes from his father’s “Tuff Gong” moniker.
He starts performing at a young age and first records an album in the mid-1990s. His work focuses on “toasting”, a Jamaican vocal style that sits close to rapping, and he shares a full-time music career with many members of his family. He is also a Rastafarian, and his music reflects Rastafari ideas of love and political freedom.
Marley has three records to his name and wins three Grammy Awards. Welcome to Jamrock gives him the highest-placed reggae album on the US Billboard album charts, and the title track reaches the highest position for a reggae song in the UK Top 40.
