Cut La Roc is the performance name of Lee Potter, a DJ and producer from Brighton, United Kingdom, born in 1972. He is associated with big beat and funky breaks, and his early musical interests develop through Brighton’s b-boy and acid house scenes. As a teenager, he spends time around local breakdancers, learning their moves and scratching techniques, before acid house further shapes his approach to dance music.

Career

Cut La Roc builds a reputation through DJ sets that combine turntablism, showmanship and party-focused selections. He performs in Australia, the United States, across Europe and in the Far East, but his strongest profile is in the UK. He also appears on Top of the Pops as the DJ for Wildchild on the top ten hit “Renegade Master”.

Recordings and releases

His early work includes two EPs in the “Mad Skills” series, which stand alongside early releases by Fatboy Slim, Midfield General and Bentley Rhythm Ace in the development of the Skint label’s big beat era. In 2000 he releases a mix album for the Ministry of Sound’s FSUK imprint and sets a world record for DJing with eight decks.

His debut album for Skint, La Roc Rocs, is released in July 2000. The album includes the tracks “Freeze”, “Fallen” and “Makin’ It Hot”, and draws on a wide range of dance music styles, including rap cut-ups, jungle and techno influences.

Residency and performance style

Cut La Roc holds a four-year residency at the Big Beat Boutique and continues to tour internationally. His sets are known for scratch-based display and for mixing a wide selection of dance tracks.
