Cupola

Cupola is a band from Sofia, Bulgaria, active since 2005. It is identified as a Bulgarian progressive death/black metal group, and the available record of the name also refers to a separate folk trio with the same name.

Band history

The band forms in September 2005 after a drunken agreement to make music together. Its early line-up settles after a series of changes. The original members include Misho, Pazzo, Geleto and Asparuh, with Asparuh later passing the bass part to Ficho. Simo then joins to play bass, and Rumen later comes in on keyboards after the previous keyboardist Razvigor is removed from the group.

The first live appearance takes place on 25 June 2006 in Plovdiv. After that performance, the band continues as a full group and begins playing concerts around Bulgaria with acts including Distorment, Eufobia, Atephobia, Agonic Faint and Symbolic.

Recording and releases

Following a performance at United Underground Fest II, Cupola begins recording its first album. Recording takes place in Blagoevgrad with sound engineer Niki Velev. The material is then mastered by Pesho, guitarist of Awake from Sofia. The finished album is titled Mistaken By Design and is issued by Distributor of Pain. Before the album appears, the band also releases the single “War” as a free downloadable track.

The album is promoted through radio appearances, forum boards and websites, and is also presented live in Varna and Sofia. A report from the Varna concert and an interview are broadcast by BNT.

Other act using the name

A separate Cupola is a folk trio consisting of Doug Eunson, Sarah Matthews and Oli Matthews. This trio plays English and European dance music and English songs in three-part harmony, using instruments including melodeons, hurdy gurdy, saxophones, clarinet, fiddle and viola. Their albums are Ivy and ROAM.
