Cowboy

Cowboy is an American country rock and southern rock group from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 1969 by Scott Boyer and Tommy Talton. The band is active from 1969 to the present and is associated with the country rock and southern rock styles.

History

Before forming Cowboy, members have played in 31st Of February and We The People. The group comes together in Jacksonville, where Boyer, Talton, Tom Wynn on drums, George Clark on bass and Bill Pillmore on keyboards live together and rehearse regularly. Duane Allman recommends the band to Phil Walden, who signs them to Capricorn Records.

Cowboy releases four albums on Capricorn in the 1970s. Their debut album, Reach for the Sky, appears in 1970, followed by Five’ll Getcha Ten after sessions at Muscle Shoals. In 1973 they release Why Quit When You’re Losing?.

Notable associations

The band shares stages with The Allman Brothers Band and tours with them. After touring with the group, Boyer and Talton are recruited to the Capricorn rhythm section. Cowboy also serves as the backing band on Gregg Allman’s On Tour album from 1974.

Song recognition

Cowboy is best known for “Please Be With Me,” a song later covered by Eric Clapton on 461 Ocean Boulevard.
