Cory Chisel
Cory Chisel is a singer-songwriter from Appleton, Wisconsin, born in 1982. He performs with Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, and is also associated with Traveller and Breathing Machine.
Background
Chisel’s early connection to music comes through church. His father is a Baptist minister, and his mother plays piano during services. Raised around sermons and spirituals, he develops an interest in the language and melody of gospel, especially themes of loss and redemption.
Music and style
Based in Appleton with The Wandering Sons, Chisel works in an Americana-influenced style that draws on folk-country and Delta blues. His voice is described as soulful and expressive, and the band’s arrangements are noted for being loosely orchestrated and tightly played.
Cabin Ghosts
His EP Cabin Ghosts is recorded mostly live at Robinwood, his family’s cabin in the woods of Elco, Wisconsin, and at a live concert in his hometown. The songs are shaped by the landscape and atmosphere of his home state, with stark and haunted melodies that reflect the influence of his upbringing.
