Cornell Campbell, also known as Cornel Campbell, is a reggae and roots reggae singer from Kingston, Jamaica. He begins recording in 1956 and becomes known for a light, delicate vocal style that makes frequent use of falsetto.

Early recording work

Campbell records early shuffle and ska songs at Studio One for Coxsone Dodd, including “My Treasure” and “Don’t Want Your Loving”. His Studio One output also includes “Stars”, “Queen Of The Minstrels”, “Magic Spell” and “Trick In The Book”.

Groups and aliases

Alongside his solo recordings, Campbell sings in several groups, including The Sensations, The Eternals, The Uniques and The Jays. He is associated with the names The Uniques and Cornell Campbell and The Eternals. His sister, Cecille Campbell, also sings at Studio One and is a member of the Soulettes with Rita Marley.

1970s and later work

In the 1970s, Campbell leaves Studio One and begins a productive association with producer Bunny Lee. This period brings a run of successful releases and earns him the nickname “the Gorgon”.

He remains active in later years, recording singles such as “Hell In A Yard” for King Tubby’s Firehouse label with The Jays. He also records “King In My Empire” with Rhythm & Sound and tracks with Dub Syndicate. After a period spent concentrating on his family farm, he continues to record sporadically and appears at occasional gigs.
