Coal Chamber

Coal Chamber is an American alternative metal, industrial metal and nu metal group from Los Angeles, active from 1993 to the present. It forms in 1992 under the name She’s in Pain, before adopting the name Coal Chamber in 1993. The band is founded by vocalist Dez Fafara and guitarist Miguel “Meegs” Rascón, with bassist Rayna Foss and drummer Jon Tor in the early line-up. Mike Cox replaces Tor on drums in 1995, establishing the classic line-up.

Early releases and breakthrough

After signing with Roadrunner Records, Coal Chamber releases its self-titled debut album in 1997. The album includes “Loco” and later goes Gold in the United States. The group tours widely in support of the record and shares bills with acts including Machine Head, Napalm Death, Pantera, Anthrax and Megadeth. In 1996, the band plays the first Ozzfest, which leads to management by Sharon Osbourne.

Chamber Music and Dark Days

The second album, Chamber Music, appears in 1999 and marks a shift towards more melody and atmosphere. It debuts at number 22 on the Billboard 200 and includes the band’s only US charting single, a version of Peter Gabriel’s “Shock the Monkey”, with guest vocals from Ozzy Osbourne. The record receives mixed reviews and sells less than the debut. During this period, Nadja Peulen temporarily fills in for Foss on bass during maternity leave. Coal Chamber records Dark Days between May and September 2001, amid internal tension and substance abuse problems. Foss leaves after the recording, and Peulen becomes her permanent replacement. Dark Days is released in 2002.

Breakup and later reunions

Coal Chamber disbands in 2003 because of personal conflict, substance abuse issues and creative differences. A compilation, Giving the Devil His Due, follows with early demos, alternative versions and remixes, and The Best of Coal Chamber appears in 2004. Fafara later forms DevilDriver, while other members pursue separate projects. In 2008, Fafara and Rascón reconcile publicly during a live performance. The band reunites in 2011 with Fafara, Cox, Rascón and bassist Chela Rhea Harper, performs again at festivals including Soundwave and Download, and signs with Napalm Records. Peulen rejoins in 2013. Rivals, the fourth studio album, follows in 2015. The group then enters a hiatus in 2016 before a further reunion in 2022 and returns to live performance.
