Cigarettes for Breakfast

Cigarettes for Breakfast is a Philadelphia shoegaze and dream pop group active since 2019. It begins as the bedroom project of Matt Whiteford and develops into a band with an ever-changing cast of members and collaborators.

The group is associated with lush soundscapes, raw and emotive performances, and heavily fuzzed guitar textures. Its sound draws on shoegaze and dream pop, with references to acts such as My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. It also sits within rock, post-rock and ambient territory.

Cigarettes for Breakfast emerges from the DIY music scene and performs alongside acts including Slow Crush, The Asteroid No. 4 and Mahogany. The project releases several demos, EPs and singles before its first full-length album, Join the Circus, in 2023.

Join the Circus explores themes of love, loss and self-discovery. The project’s second full-length album, Slow Motion, is scheduled through Abandon Everything Records on vinyl, Candlepin Records on tape and The Upstate Sound digitally.

The band is also described in relation to a comparison with The Jesus and Mary Chain, with its style linked to the idea of writing a love song with a cosmic feel.
