Chevelle

Chevelle is an alternative metal band from Grayslake, Illinois, formed in 1994 by brothers Pete Loeffler and Sam Loeffler with Matt Scott. Pete Loeffler sings and plays guitar, and Sam Loeffler plays drums. The band begins by playing parties and outdoor events, then moves on to Chicago club bookings when Joe Loeffler is still a teenager. Matt Scott is later replaced on bass by Joe Loeffler in 1996.

Line-up changes

Joe Loeffler leaves the band in 2005 after what is described as irreconcilable differences. Geno Lenardo of Filter fills in on bass for a short period, and Dean Bernardini, the Loefflers’ brother-in-law, becomes the permanent bassist later that year. Bernardini also provides live backing vocals.

Recorded output and recognition

Chevelle’s debut album, Point #1, appears in 1999 after the band records a demo called The Blue Album and signs to Steve Taylor’s Squint Entertainment. The album is produced by Steve Albini and recorded over 17 days at Electrical Audio studios. Wonder What’s Next follows in 2002 and goes platinum by the following summer; its single “Send the Pain Below” reaches number one on modern rock and mainstream radio.

This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) arrives in 2004, debuts at number eight on the Billboard 200, and is certified gold by the RIAA within six weeks. Its lead single, “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along),” reaches number one on the Mainstream Rock chart. “The Clincher” peaks at number three on that chart, and “Panic Prone” reaches number 26. Vena Sera follows in 2007 and is recorded with Michael “Elvis” Baskette, who also works with the band on earlier albums. It debuts at number 12 on the Billboard 200, making Chevelle the only rock band in the Top 15.

Later albums

Sci-Fi Crimes is released in 2009 and is co-produced with Brian Virtue in Nashville, Tennessee. The single “Jars” becomes the most added track at rock radio and reaches the Top 20 after two weeks. Hats Off to the Bull follows in 2011, with “Face to the Floor” as the lead single. The band’s later studio albums include La Gargola (2014), The North Corridor (2016), NIRATIAS (2021) and Bright as Blasphemy (2025).

Sound and influences

Chevelle’s music is described as heavy alternative metal with aggressive guitar work and a sense of tension built around loud, forceful bursts. Their sound is shaped by the riff style of Helmet and the dynamic vocal approach associated with Tool. The band is also noted for moving between hard rock and alternative rock, and for using the family car name Chevelle as its band name.
