Cash Money

Cash Money is a Chicago duo formed in 1994 by singer and guitarist John Humphrey, who previously plays in God and Texas and later founds the jazz-rock group Late Great Danes. After forming Cash Money, Humphrey works with former Rosehip drummer Scott Giampino; when Late Great Danes goes on hold, the two continue performing together under this name.

The group begins with a single on the small Tug-O-War label before signing to Touch and Go. They record at Chicago’s Idful Music studios with Red Red Meat drummer Brian Deck producing, and release their first album, Black Hearts and Broken Wills, in 1997. The act is also known for the single “Easy Street”.

Although the available information associates the name with country, Southern rock and blues rock, the recorded genre profile places Cash Money within disco, gospel and soul.
