Caroline Rose

Caroline Rose is an American singer, songwriter, musician and producer from Long Island, New York. She is born in 1989 and grows up in Center Moriches. Her work moves between country pop, folk pop, indie pop and pop, and her recorded output develops from folk- and country-based songwriting into a more synth-driven pop and rock sound.

Early life and education

Rose is the daughter of two artists, and she begins writing songs and poems at the age of 13. She attends Wellesley College in Massachusetts and graduates in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in architecture.

Early releases

In 2012, Rose and producer and multi-instrumentalist Jer Coons launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund her first album, America Religious. She self-releases the album later that year. It blends American folk music, country and rockabilly.

Two years later, she releases I Will Not Be Afraid on Little Hi! Records, her first nationally distributed album. It is also produced with Jer Coons and continues in a range of Americana styles, including two songs that first appear on America Religious.

Shift in sound

After I Will Not Be Afraid, Rose takes an extended break from touring and new releases while exploring different musical directions. Following three years, several personnel changes, a signing to mother + Pop Music and a move to New West Records, she releases her third album, Loner. The album is co-produced by Rose and Paul Butler of The Bees. It marks a major change in style, combining pop and alternative rock with prominent synthesizers. Rose also plays most of the instruments herself. Her writing on the album is more overtly humorous, sarcastic and satirical than on her earlier records. Before the album is released, she issues the songs “Money” and “Soul No. 5” with accompanying videos.

Later albums and wider recognition

Loner is followed by the video for “Jeannie Becomes a Mom,” directed by Amanda Speva and featuring Abby Pierce in the title role. The song is ranked fifteenth among the year’s best singles by National Public Radio.

Rose then announces Superstar and releases “Feel The Way I Want” with a video shot on an iPhone during an 11-day road trip from Hollywood, California to Hollywood, Florida. She describes the album as a cinematic pop record about leaving home in search of something larger and more glamorous, while also finding self-confidence. Superstar is released in 2020, and she makes her television debut performing “Feel The Way I Want” on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
