Brandt Brauer Frick is an electronic group from Berlin, Germany, active since 2008. The trio consists of Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick. Their work centres on a form of acoustic techno that brings together contemporary classical music, house and techno.

Background and members

Daniel Brandt and Jan Brauer first work together as a duo under the name Scott, producing club music with a jazz-influenced approach and releasing EPs on labels including My Best Friend, Fluid Ounce and THE GYM. Paul Frick studies classical and modern composition with Friedrich Goldmann at the Universität der Künste Berlin, and he also releases house music, with EPs on labels such as Kalk Pets, THE GYM and 30porumalinha. The three musicians then form Brandt Brauer Frick as a shared project.

Style and instrumentation

The group uses prepared piano, vibraphone, drums, percussion, brass and string instruments, Rhodes, bass guitar and analogue synthesizers. Their sound is built mostly from acoustic sources, including the bass drum, with only a small number of electronic instruments completing the texture. The result is described through references to Steve Reich and old-school loop techno, combining minimalism, complexity, experimental structure and club-oriented energy.

Releases

The trio’s first EP, Iron Man, appears in August 2009. Other EPs include Wallah/Button on The Gym and Bop/Paino Shakur on Tartelet Records. A full-length debut album follows on Tartelet Records. The group also works on acoustic reworks for Bozeman on Doppelschall and for Emika on Ninja Tune.
