Blue King Brown

Blue King Brown is an Australian urban roots group that originates from Byron Bay and is based in Melbourne. The band forms in 2003 and remains active, with a line-up that includes Natalie Pa‘apa’a, Carlo Santone, Sam Cope, Salvador Persico and Peter Wilkins. It releases on Indica Records.

Formation and early work

The group develops from the songwriting partnership of Carlo Santone and Natalie Pa'apa'a, who begin by playing guitar and writing songs while jamming with residents and itinerants in Byron Bay. They first perform as a percussion duo and also play with a band called Skin, which leads into the formation of Blue King Brown. After moving to Melbourne in 2004 to focus on the project, they add Salvador Persico on percussion, bringing a Latin influence into the sound. Sam Cope plays keyboards and Peter Wilkins is the drummer.

Releases

Blue King Brown releases a self-titled EP in 2005, followed by the album Stand Up in 2006 and Worldwize Part 1 - North & South in 2010.

Live work and collaborations

The band opens for a wide range of artists, including Carlos Santana, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Damian Marley, The John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire, Silverchair, Dispatch and Powderfinger. Its early connection with the Australian roots scene also leads to guest percussion appearances with The John Butler Trio at many of their shows, along with other performances with local and international touring artists.
