Black Circles are an Australian group from Melbourne, active since 2010. They play djent, progressive metal and progressive rock. The band is described as an Australian djent act.

The line-up is built around guitarist and singer Dan, bassist Mayumi and drummer Tris. Their music combines heavy, melody-led rock with elements associated with progressive and metal styles, and their sound is shaped by Dan’s vocals, Mayumi’s bass parts and Tris’s drumming.

Releases and activity

The group’s early releases include Little Girl and Final Straw. Little Girl is their debut release, and Final Straw follows it as a second single. Final Straw receives radio play on Tom Robinson’s Introducing Show on BBC Radio 6 and on Total Rock Radio, and it also draws online reviews and coverage in magazines including Rhythm, Bass Guitar and Hello Kitty Fashion.

They also promote their work through live performance, including a RocSoc university tour and appearances at summer festivals across the UK.

Live performances and reception

Black Circles build a loyal following and attract attention from radio shows in the UK, the USA and Canada. They perform at Farm Festival, Indie Week Ireland, Big Bike Festival and The Great Escape in Brighton. Their live show is strong enough to lead Crossroad Films, a production company associated with Biffy Clyro, Athlete and Muse, to produce a video for Final Straw.

Musical style

Their songs are noted for combining heavy guitar tone with strong melody. Their sound is compared with Queens of the Stone Age and early Foo Fighters, alongside a more demanding, technically focused approach to writing and performance.
