Bird

Bird is the name used by Japanese jazz singer Kitayama Yuki, who performs under that pseudonym and is identified with a blend of jazz, R&B, bossa nova, swing and house. Born in Japan in 1975, she is presented as one of Japan’s major jazz figures.

Career

Bird begins with folk-oriented music in 2002, then returns after nearly a year away with the single Warabigami, which has a reggae-influenced sound. The later single Sparkles moves back towards jazz while also adding disco elements. Her debut album appears in July 1999 and sells 700,000 copies, and she receives a Japan Gold Record for newcomers. In October of that year, her first national concert tour, Bird Tour 1999 Live!, sells out.

Collaborations

In June 2006, Bird teams up with Kama Aina, RT and Moose Hill to form the unit Tori, a name that means “bird” in Japanese.
