Billy Walton Band
Billy Walton Band is a blues rock group built around guitarist and vocalist Billy Walton. The line-up named here also includes William Paris on bass and vocals, and John Hummel on drums, although another account of the group lists bassist William Paris and drummer Marcus Croan. The band’s sound is described as rooted in hard blues and blues rock, with a strong funk element and connections to the jam band tradition and the New Jersey shore scene.
Background
Billy Walton develops his style in the Asbury Park and wider New Jersey shore music scene. He starts playing there at the age of 15 and becomes best known as the guitarist and vocalist in Boccigalupe & the Bad Boys, a group associated with veteran Asbury Park musician Tony Amato. During that period, Walton plays many shows in the United States and Europe and also sits in with a number of well-known rock musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Gary U.S. Bonds and Double Trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s backing band.
Style and influences
The band’s music is described as hard blues with influences from Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, alongside elements associated with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. Walton’s playing is presented as central to the group’s identity, with his reputation built on live performance and a style that combines rock guitar with blues phrasing.
Connections
Walton also develops a close friendship with Roger Mayer, the British guitar effects specialist whose equipment is widely associated with major rock guitarists, especially since the Hendrix era. That connection reflects Walton’s interest in the technical side of electric guitar sound as well as his performance background.
