Big Tree

Big Tree is a Californian rock and folk group from the United States, based in Berkeley from January 2012. The band consists of Morgan Heringer and Matt Schory.

Style and lineup

The group’s music draws on organic folk, greasy blues and ambient indie rock. Its songs are described as having an anthemic, lush and striking character, with vocals, keys, percussion, bass, guitar and drums forming the core of the sound.

The recorded lineup named in the group’s releases includes Kaila McIntyre-Bader on vocals and keys, Anna Ghezzi on vocals and percussion, Luke Bace on bass and vocals, Dan Pirello on guitar, and Matt Schory on drums.

Recordings

Big Tree’s catalogue includes two full-length records, two EPs, and the self-released My, How You’ve Grown. That release presents the band as moving into a new stage of development. Another release, Little EP, is noted for its stripped-back and earthy feel.

Live performance

After years of near-constant performing, Big Tree develops a live reputation built around audience participation and range, moving from reflective material to dance-focused set endings with sing-alongs.

Place in the Bay Area scene

After settling in Berkeley, the band becomes a fixture in the Bay Area music scene while continuing to perform on both West and East Coast circuits, including a scheduled appearance at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City.
