Beyond The Wizards Sleeve

Beyond The Wizards Sleeve is a London-based duo made up of Richard Norris and Erol Alkan. Active since 2006, the group works under this pseudonym on psychedelic, electronic and experimental music, with a strong connection to krautrock and psychedelic rock.

Remixing and reworking older material

The duo is best known for its remixes of Peter Bjorn & John, Tracey Thorn and Midlake. Their approach often involves cutting up and reassembling older psych and Krautrock recordings, using samples, looping and other studio effects to reshape the original tracks.

Among the examples associated with the project, “I Swim Around” is built from Neu!’s “Hallogallo” and adds samples and reversed effects, while “Bubble Burst” combines a backbeat loop with guitar lines, organs and percussion to create a psych and soul-inflected arrangement.

Albums and collaborations

The duo releases its debut album, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Ark 1, in 2008. After a period away from the project, it follows with The Soft Bounce, which includes vocal contributions from Jane Weaver, Hannah Peel, Mystery Jets’ Blaine Harrison, Euros Childs of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, John Savage and Holly Miranda.
