Benny Page

Benny Page is a UK drum and bass and jungle DJ and producer, born in 1981. He grows up musically through hip-hop, which he discovers at the age of 11, with DJ Premier, Mobb Deep, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Nas among the artists who shape his early taste. He also plays drums and learns guitar in a school band.

Early development

He discovers jungle at the age of 14, which drives him to start making his own music. Tracks such as The House Crew’s “Super Hero”, A-Zone’s “Calling All the People” and “Worries in the Dance” on London Someting Records are important influences. He later learns to use a sequencer on his father’s PC.

Training and first productions

At 16, Benny Page begins a two-year music technology course. He becomes increasingly committed to production and starts working full time so he can afford better equipment. His early work appears on Cutterz Choice, a South London label, which releases his first track, “Chainsaws”.

Breakthrough releases

“Addictive” follows and gains support from DJs including Nicky Blackmarket, Brockie and Ash Attack. “Sneaker Pimp” becomes his first track to receive airplay on a major radio station, when John Peel plays it on BBC Radio 1. “Neckbreaker/Kist” is the first release in the Graffs series, and “Neckbreaker” is later included on an Aphrodite mix CD released in the United States.

Remixes and later tracks

After this, Benny Page is asked to remix Aphrodite’s “Stalker”. Other tracks include “Pinball”, “Tempest” and “Moneyzone”, which all become successful on the dance floor. His productions use vocals prominently, and he continues to work with vocals in his music.
