Atrophy

Atrophy is an American thrash metal band from Tucson, Arizona, formed in 1986 by Chris Lykins, James Gulotta and Brian Zimmerman. The original name is Heresy, but the group changes it after the line-up is completed by Tim Kelly and Rick Skowron. The band remains active from 1986 to the present.

Early releases and Roadrunner Records

In 1987, Atrophy records two cassette demos and is then signed by Roadrunner Records, a label known for thrash metal. The band releases two studio albums on the label: Socialized Hate in 1988 and Violent By Nature in 1990.

Tours, split and later activity

Atrophy tours the United States and Europe with Sacred Reich and Coroner. After the European tour, Chris Lykins leaves to attend medical school. The band continues with new members and records a pre-production tape for a third album, but Roadrunner Records drops the group after losing confidence in the lineup and in Lykins as a main songwriter.

Tim Kelly and James Gulotta later form Head Circus, with Rick Skowron appearing in the project intermittently. Lykins completes medical school and works as an ENT, Gulotta runs a tile business, and Skowron works as an avionics engineer and is an avid motorcycle racer.

Reformation and comeback album

Atrophy reforms in 2015 with original members Brian Zimmerman, James Gulotta and Tim Kelly, joined by Casper Garret and Rich Olsen, who is later replaced by Bobby Stein. Zimmerman leaves the band in 2020 after a European tour is cut short by COVID-19, and the group goes on indefinite hiatus. Tim Kelly later works under the name Scars of Atrophy, while Zimmerman eventually reforms Atrophy with a different line-up including guitarists Mark Coglan and Nathan Montalvo, bassist Josh Gibbs of Malevolent Creation, and drummer Sage Johnson. The band releases the comeback album Asylum in 2024 through Massacre Records.
