Arcade Fire is a Montréal-based Canadian indie rock group that forms in 2001. The band centres on Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, and over time includes Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara, with former and additional members including Will Butler, Howard Bilerman, Sarah Neufeld, Owen Pallett, Marika Anthony-Shaw, Pietro Amato, Mike Olsen, Kelly Pratt, Colin Stetson, Josh Deu, Myles Broscoe, Dane Mills, Brendan Reed, Timothy Kyle and others.

Formation and line-up

Arcade Fire forms around the husband-and-wife partnership of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. The group’s early live and recording line-up includes Dane Mills on the EP and in early shows, while the wider touring setup brings in horn players and violinists. The band is also associated with a large and changing instrumental roster, with members and touring players covering guitar, drums, bass, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, xylophone, keyboard, French horn, accordion and harp.

Will Butler plays keyboards and guitar and later leaves the group to focus on solo work. The line-up also includes musicians such as Richard Reed Parry, who plays bass and guitar, Tim Kingsbury on bass, and Jeremy Gara on drums.

Sound and stage presentation

The group works in indie rock and related styles including alternative dance, alternative rock, art rock, baroque pop, chamber pop and indie pop. Their recordings and live shows make wide use of orchestral instruments, and their concerts are known for frequent instrumental switching among the musicians. They also have a recognisable live presentation, often wearing relatively formal clothing on stage.

Early releases and breakthrough

Arcade Fire first sell an eponymous EP, later commonly referred to by fans as the Us Kids Know EP, at early shows before it is remastered and given a wider release. Their first full-length album, Funeral, is recorded in late 2003 and early 2004 after the line-up settles. The album gains strong attention through live performance, a record deal with Merge Records, and early support from David Bowie. It becomes a major independent success, reaching the Billboard 200 for Merge Records, going gold in Canada and the UK, and selling more than half a million copies worldwide. It also earns a 9.7 rating from Pitchfork, is named Album of the Year by MTV2’s 2005 review hosted by Zane Lowe, and is placed at number two in NME’s list of the best albums of 2005, with “Rebellion (Lies)” named best track.

The group receives the Juno Award for Songwriters of the Year in 2006 for “Wake Up”, “Rebellion (Lies)” and “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)”.

Later albums

The follow-up album, Neon Bible, is recorded after the band buys an old church near Montréal and converts it into a studio. Its promotion includes the 1-866-NEONBIBLE telephone line and the song “Intervention”.

The Suburbs is released in 2010 and debuts at number one in both the UK and the United States. It later wins Album of the Year at the 53rd Grammy Awards.

Arcade Fire contributes “Abraham’s Daughter” to The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond, where it appears in the film’s end credits.

Reflektor follows, with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem involved in the recording process. The band works on the album in several studios, including Murphy’s DFA Records studio in New York.

In 2017, the group releases Everything Now, led by the title track and followed by “Creature Comfort”, “Signs of Life” and “Electric Blue”. The album reaches number one on the Billboard 200, giving the band a third consecutive and third overall chart-topping album.

WE arrives in 2022 after a period of writing that begins before the COVID-19 lockdown. The lead-up includes postcards, signage and social-media imagery using the band’s logo and the word “Unsubscribe”, and the release is followed by the group’s first world tour since 2018.

Recognition and status

Arcade Fire is featured on the cover of Time magazine’s Canadian edition in 2005 and is described as helping put Canadian music on the world map. The group remains active from 2001 to the present and continues to have a substantial live and recording presence.
