Årabrot

Årabrot is a Norwegian alternative and experimental rock band from Haugesund, Norway. Formed in 2001, it is active as a group with members Vidar Evensen, Kjetil Nernes and Karin Park. Its sound is associated with noise rock, sludge, industrial, punk, alternative rock, doom metal, grunge, heavy metal, new wave and noise.

Career

The band first gains wider attention with The Brother Seed, its third album, which is produced by Steve Albini and appears in 2009. After that release, Årabrot develops a busy period that includes commissioned work for Henie Onstad Kunstsenter and live scores for silent films, including Faust (1926) in Trondheim, Häxan (1922) at Øyafestivalen, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and Die Nibelungen (1924) at Verdensteatret in Tromsø.

During this period, the band also releases the exploratory EPs AbsoluteNegativism, I Rove and Mæsscr, along with two albums under the Nernes Skagen name. Its later albums include the Billy Anderson-produced double album REVENGE and Solar Anus, which again features Steve Albini as producer.

Årabrot’s lyric writing draws on a wide range of literary and philosophical references, including the Bible, Dante’s Inferno, Camus, Sartre, Bataille, Lautréamont, Henry Miller, de Sade, Coleridge, Poe, de Quincey, Aleister Crowley, Jorge Luis Borges, Federico Lorca and Jens Bjørneboe. Its self-titled sixth album appears in 2013 with artwork by Johannes Høie. In 2014, following Kjetil Nernes’s recovery from throat cancer, the band releases the mini-album I Modi, followed by You Bunch of Idiots in 2015.
