Angus & Julia Stone
Angus & Julia Stone are a Sydney, Australia-based folk and indie pop duo made up of siblings Angus Stone and Julia Stone. They begin working together in 2006 after both have already played solo sets at open mic nights, sometimes with the other as a backing player. Their songs are written individually and then developed together, with attention to structure and harmonies.
Recording history
The duo release their debut studio album, A Book Like This, in 2007. It reaches No. 6 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Their second album, Down the Way, follows in 2010 and reaches No. 1 in Australia. Their self-titled album appears in 2014. Down the Way is also notable for marking their first work as producers.
Awards and recognition
At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010, Angus & Julia Stone win five awards from nine nominations. These include Album of the Year, Best Adult Alternative Album, Best Cover Art and Producer of the Year for Down the Way, as well as Single of the Year for “Big Jet Plane”.
“Big Jet Plane” also becomes a platinum-selling single and is voted No. 1 in the 2011 Triple J Hottest 100. Down the Way reaches triple platinum sales in Australia and platinum status in France.
Touring and wider reach
The duo tour internationally, including the UK, Germany, Austria, Spain and Portugal, and play sold-out shows in Europe. Their music appears on US television dramas such as Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, and they perform at major US festivals including Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo and Coachella. Down the Way is recorded in several locations, including Cornwall, Brooklyn, Coolangatta, London and Queens.
