Ane Brun
Ane Brunvoll, known professionally as Ane Brun, is a Norwegian singer-songwriter from Molde, Norway. She works in art pop and rock, and has her own label, Ane Brun Publishing. She is associated with acoustic and indie music, and her career centres on songwriting, guitar-based performance and live work.
Career
Brun begins performing after taking up her family’s old acoustic guitar when she is 21. She teaches herself songs by artists including Ani DiFranco, Joni Mitchell, Ben Harper and Nick Drake, and develops her own guitar style in the process. In 1998, while on holiday in Spain, she makes her first public live appearances on the streets of Barcelona and San Sebastian. After returning to Norway, she moves to Bergen, starts writing her own material and spends a period in the Norwegian band Damsels in Distress.
She moves to Stockholm in 2000 and builds a solo career based around extensive live performance in Sweden and Norway. After several unofficial EP releases and a run of live appearances, she develops a following and releases her first official album, Spending Time with Morgan, in 2003. The album is issued through her own label, DetErMine Records, which she co-owns with Swedish musician Ellekari Larsson and her band The Tiny, and is licensed to V2 Music.
Recorded work
Her 2005 release A Temporary Dive follows the success of her debut and includes songs such as “The Fight Song” and “My Lover Will Go”. The track “Song No. 6” features Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. She also releases Duets in 2005, Changing of the Seasons and Sketches in 2008, and It All Starts with One in 2011, which is her first album to chart outside Norway and Sweden. In 2013 she releases the compilation Songs 2003-2013.
Collaborations and performance
Brun collaborates with Koop, an indie swing and funk band, on “Koop Island Blues”, the opening track on Koop Islands. She performs both solo and with a full band that includes drums, bass, piano, electric guitar and lap-steel guitar, and continues to play live widely at venues and festivals.
