Anaïs Mitchell is an American singer-songwriter, musician and playwright from Montpelier, Vermont. She is associated with alternative folk, americana, country folk and folk, and she also performs as a member of Bonny Light Horseman. She attends Middlebury College.
Career
Mitchell begins releasing solo work in 2002 with The Song They Sang... When Rome Fell. In 2003, she wins the New Folk Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Her second album, Hymns for the Exiled, follows in 2004 on Waterbug Records, and her third album, The Brightness, appears in 2007 on Righteous Babe.
Hadestown
Mitchell creates the folk opera Hadestown, which first debuts in 2006 in collaboration with composer Michael Chorney and director Ben T. Matchstick. She later releases a concept album version of Hadestown in 2010. The work is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, with contributions from Justin Vernon as Orpheus, Ani DiFranco as Persephone, Greg Brown as Hades and Ben Knox Miller as Hermes; Mitchell sings the role of Eurydice.
Later releases
Young Man in America is released on Wilderland Records in 2012 in the UK and the United States.
