Alfie Boe

Alfie Boe is a tenor and actor from Blackpool, United Kingdom, born in 1973. He works in classical music and opera, and also appears in musical theatre and Broadway productions.

Training and early career

He begins his studies at the Royal College of Music as an opera singer, where he is encouraged to explore classical folk music. After leaving home, he joins the D'Oyly Carte Touring Opera Company. He later moves to London to study more fully at the Royal College of Music, then goes on to the National Opera Studio and the Villar Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House.

Breakthrough and stage work

His first major break comes when Baz Luhrmann casts him after a long search for one of the lead roles in a production of Puccini's La Bohème. His performance on Broadway brings him a Tony Award. His other honours include the John McCormack Young Voice Award and the Lyric Tenor of the World Audience Award.

Recordings, tours and recognition

Boe has charting classical albums and receives a nomination for a Classical Brit Award for Best Album, alongside artists including Paul McCartney and Sting. He tours extensively, performs at the Royal Albert Hall with Lesley Garrett and Sir Willard White, and appears in a sold-out run of English National Opera's Kismet with Michael Ball. He also performs at Clarence House and accepts the role of ambassador for HRH's Arts & Kids Foundation.

Artistic style

His work is rooted in classical and folk traditions, with an emphasis on the link between music, lyrics and storytelling. He describes a strong connection to the emotion and sense of homeland expressed in the songs he performs.
